While I feel sorry to hear abt this story, but at the same time I feel that she has not exercised good parenting skills. Good parenting is not about giving everything for the child everytime the child wants and everything the child wants. Strictly disciplining the child to make him / her a useful citizen is very much the responsibility of any parent. Doesnt matter whether its poor parent, rich parent, single parent or double parent. A good parent will make sure that the child is well brought up with the necessary knowledge and discipline which will help him / her become a responsible adult. Pampering the child with the excuse that he is the only child or that he doesnt have a father, etc is a sure fire recipe to spoil the future of him / her. I know a few cases that happened exactly like this. How the child is brought up is how the child will behave when grown. There is no point in regretting later on.
This case of the lady babying not only the son but also the DIL, is an extreme case of unjustified pampering and a serious lack of parenting skill. This should not be mistaken with parental love. Parental love does not condone the bad behaviour of the children. Parental love will in fact ensure that the parent love the child enough to discipline them. "Spare the rod and spoil the child" that is the time tested cliche that must have been coined by a very wise parent.

When he was hungry, she gave him fish but failed to teach him how to fish. His life now is a result of that failure.Vjeya has summed it up nicely.
